Death Toll in Asian Quake Passes 79,000 AP. South Asia Quake Aftermath -- Off the Wires -- Aftershocks Jolt Quake Devastated Areas.
Two strong aftershocks from Asia's deadly October 7.6 earthquake shook Wednesday unleashing landslides and setting off panic. A new Tally from regional officials raised the death toll from the October Asian quake to 79,000. The new toll makes the quake one of the deadliest in modern times. Figures were based on reports from the local government and hospital officials and the toll was likely to rise. Wednesday's quake, a 5.8 magnitude aftershock struck near the epicenter of the main quake. It was followed by another that registered 5.6. about 44 minutes later. Iqbal said, aftershock was "very heavy." Dust rising from the Valley indicated an additional landslide. It's "not over," said the U.S. quake center. |
